IMAN has returned to modelling for an “inclusive” campaign for GLORIA VANDERBILT.
The former supermodel rarely poses professionally these days, but she jumped at the chance to appear in fall 2017 advertisements for the fashion house, founded by Vanderbilt herself in the 1970s.
Iman, 61, features alongside Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover model Elsa Benitez, German fashion star and actress Tatjana Patitz and plus-size beauty Tara Lynn in the campaign, titled We Are All One.
“I don’t model anymore,” Iman told WWD. “I only do a few things that move me or with which I have associations. I did a Kenzo H&M ad because I knew Kenzo Takada and I did it years ago. But now I really only do special projects. I say ‘no’ more than I say ‘yes’. So this is very unusual for me.”
Quizzed on what made her agree to the job, Iman added, “I know it’s about jeans, but for me, it’s all about inclusion and women. It has a very timely tag line.”
Another aspect that prompted her to sign onto the venture is the fact that she’s a mother herself to daughters Zulekha Haywood, 39, and 16-year-old Alexandria Zahra Jones, who she had with late husband David Bowie.
It’s this maternal instinct that makes her wary of “everything that is going on in the world with women”, and she insists now is the time for ladies to stand together and reshape their future.
While Iman admits she didn’t wear Vanderbilt’s jeans during the company’s heyday several decades ago, she has always been a big fan of denim.
“I was either trendy or classic,” she recalled. “But I was very aware of designer jeans then. And jeans are as classic as a T-shirt, they never go out of style.”
