LILY JAMES has been cast as the younger version of MERYL STREEP’s character in the sequel to MAMMA MIA!
In the 2008 musical comedy, Meryl played Donna, who wasn’t sure if the father of her daughter Sophie was Sam, Harry or Bill, as played by Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgard, respectively.
Donna’s past will be explored in the upcoming sequel, titled Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!, which will go back and forth in time to show how relationships made in the past can resonate in the present, and Baby Driver star Lily will play the younger Donna, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The British actress has previously shown her off her singing chops by covering A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes for Cinderella, in which she played the title character, and on stage during the 2016 West End run of Romeo and Juliet.
Meryl, Pierce, and Colin will be returning for the sequel, as well as Amanda Seyfried, who played Sophie, Dominic Cooper and Christine Baranski.
The sequel, which is scheduled to hit cinemas on 20 July 2018, will feature ABBA songs not included in the first film as well as returning favourites and will be written and directed by Thandie Newton’s husband Ol Parker, who penned The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and its sequel.
ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus are back to provide music and lyrics and serve as executive producers alongside Judy Craymer, who created the stage musical, and Gary Goetzman.
Mamma Mia! is the highest grossing movie musical of all time after earning $600 million (£464 million) at the global box office.
