Swedish actress NOOMI RAPACE is testing animal rights leaders by signing on as the new face of ASTRID ANDERSEN’s fur line.
The original Girl With the Dragon Tattoo star joined the Danish designer to launch her new Saga Furs collaboration in London on Monday (08Jan18), and told reporters she wasn’t going to let animal lovers or fashion critics dictate what she could or couldn’t wear.
“I believe in the female power,” she told WWD.com, insisting there is room for fur in fashion, “as long as you are aware of the whole chain, and you know where it comes from and you know how everything happens…”
PETA president Ingrid Newkirk has responded angrily to Noomi’s remarks, telling WENN, “Since when did ‘female power’ mean stomping on animals’ necks to kill them or caging minks and then electrocuting them?
“Rapace needs to think hard about what it means to exploit others, including female animals who are used as breeding machines on fur farms and whose young are taken away from them, despite their love for them. This is an anti-feminist statement, and we hope she forgoes the hard cash and retracts it.
“Like other forms of exploitation, including that of women treated as chattel and children used for cheap labour, the fur industry should be relegated to the history books. Kind people reject the isolation, starvation, terror, and painful deaths endured by animals such as foxes and minks.”
Meanwhile, Andersen insists fur is making a comeback, adding, “I think fur is actually going to become more relevant because it is one of the things that is actually so sustainable. When you really look into the process of the fur, there is zero waste.”
