52. 1916: Dwight Eisenhower on His Wedding Day
The 34th President of the United States married Mamie Geneva Doud on July 1st, 1916. Eisenhower served in the US Army during WWI though he never saw combat. He served as the Military Governer in Germany and as the Army Chief of Staff. In 1952, he was elected president with Richard Nixon as his veep. Eisenhower authorized the establishment of NASA after Russia sent Sputnik to space. Eisenhower’s presidency saw considerable economic growth and he is consistently regarded as one of the greatest US presidents in history.
51. 1967: The First Super Bowl Halftime
Here’s Len Dawson smoking a cigarette – a Fresca – during the first ever Super Bowl halftime. Times were different back in 1967, and it wasn’t strange for an athlete to smoke. If a player was caught doing this nowadays, there would be uproar! Dawson went on to lose in the second half, the Kansas City Chiefs were beaten by the Green Bay Packers 35 to 10.
