14. The Birth of Trumponomics

It was only a matter of time before we modified Donald Trump’s name to describe a revolutionary policy destined to change the landscape, but who knew it would come before the man had even been sworn in? Trumponomics, à la Ronald Reagan, is the President-elect’s plan of tax cuts, deregulation, and protectionism intended to stimulate enterprise, create jobs, and boost the economy. The only problem is, not everyone is convinced. Sean O’Grady of Independent paints a frighteningly vivid picture of the financial world under Trump’s reign, one he said may “prove the catalyst for the next financial crisis.” New Statesmans Felix Martin seems to agree, saying Trupanomics “will give markets a boost but could end up hurting the world.”

A shift of this size to the American financial sector unavoidably changes the global economy. To say this power being in Donald Trump’s hands has some countries worried would be an understatement. Austalia, for example, would be in “economic shock,” according to Tim Harcourt. When speaking with AAP, he fears “the damage [Trump] would do by a trade war with China would be immeasurable.” Another ally — Canada — could also be harmed if Trump’s economic plans take flight. Mathieu Bédard of The Globe and Mail says, “If Canadian tax rates don’t budge, it will be tempting for corporations to move to the United States” and that along with the administration’s view on climate change, it will be “extremely difficult for Canada to enact a carbon tax.”
